 After researching Joanna Macy and her organization The Work That Reconnects I was weirdly delighted that there were people and organizations out there that were focused on these types of issues and with a positive outlook. On Joanna Macy's website there's a quote that reads, "Of all the dangers we face, from climate chaos to nuclear war, none is so great as the deadening of our response." (Welcome, Joanna Macy). I liked this quote because these issues are extremely scary and serious but the fact that we have yet to respond in a proactive way, or even active for that matter up until recently, frightens and saddens me.

In the discussion of religion, ecology, and the synergy between the two, a primary focal point to be considered is that of language. This is especially relevant with regards to the intersecting point of origin between religion and ecology: creation myths. Myth is Not an Explanation (in class)

The repeated discussion about how myth is not an explanation, but rather a way of accepting and still being able to cherish the world without necessarily picking it apart has really stuck with me. The Emily Dickinson poem that I mentioned in class, Split the Lark , was fitting, but I think it also connects to how many people that I know look to religion for a reason that things happen. For example, why does a loving God allow such horrible natural disasters? Is this asking for myth to be too much of an explanation, rather than a statement of acceptance? Searching for an answer or reason seems very human, and hard to avoid completely. When researching my creation myth for the recent paper, I came across a book on the development of the world religions, which had several tables comparing the myths between neighboring cultures. Antartica

Chapter 27 of Ecology of Eden talks about places that we have not touched on this Earth. We discussed this in class, and someone brought up the point that even in places that we have not developed on, they still face the destruction from human activity. For example, Antarctica is hardly inhabited by humans, but is facing extreme threats to its environment because of climate change and global warming. Antarctica is covered by ice that stretches about seven million cubic miles. Within the past fifty years, the west coast of the Antarctica Peninsula has been one of the most rapidly warming places on the entire planet. It has warmed by three degrees Celsius. The temperature of the Southern Ocean that surrounds the continent has increased by more than one degree Celsius in fifty years. This warming causes the wildlife that live there to suffer.
