Getting Unhooked
[Outside Reading]
Analysis of Stephanie Kaza's book Hooked!
Stephanie Kaza believes that as individuals we are hooked by the pressures of western society to indulge in our desires and over-consume resources at our pleasure. I believe this culture transformation has come from a decreased religious salience and increased access to information, goods, and services due to technology. There is no retreating from this technology, and a religious movement would be very hard to ignite, so I believe the best way to interact with nature is through effort, education, and a sensuous connection. Effort is how we change the world day by day, being conscientious of our behaviors (i.e. recycling, diet choices, and modest consumption), this is also the quickest solution. Education is the way to inform and influence the generations to come through environmental studies, improved policy, and ecological awareness. It would be beneficial to include environmental studies courses in early grade school, so children will become associated and be knowledgeable about the human impact on the environment from an early age. Lastly, I believe the best way to create a change in values and morals of future generations is to encourage sensuous connections with nature. Through sensuous encounters with nature, the individual will change their perception and values of the natural environment, which will in turn result in a attitude and behavior shift. This includes being outside in the wild (not suburban neighborhoods) where an individual can feel the sublime, and develop a spiritual connection to nature and the extra-human.
