Preserving History

As we all know, Notre Dame caught a blaze last week.  Now with millions of dollars being fundraised to fix the damage the question becomes do the parties involved modernize the building to prevent another fire or do they restore it to preserve history?  While some argue that it should be modernized in order to make the building more sustainable others say that it needs to be restored to as  close to the original as possible for people to be able to experience the church as it was originally.  However, the problem with this trajectory is that there are no longer any trees in France large enough to replace the wood that was burned and destroyed.

Even in a situation like this nature still is a topic that comes up because humans have taken as much of a resource as they can without thinking about the future.  Trees in France were used and the thought of possibly needing some in the future never came up.  Now when people are arguing for history preservation they don't have the option to be able to fully commit to that path because the resources to do so no longer exist.
