Pure Form

In Chapter 13 of Ecology of Eden, the author discusses the modern idol of suburbia. The term Arcadia refers to a pasture area, such as that of one outside of the tower, but close to the mountain. In modern day this would be Suburbia, being right between the city, our tower, and nature, our mountain. However, this mid-point of suburbia still leads to pollution as the values of the tower are introduced to the mountain, and leads to chaos rather than purity and peace.

Even though we want the best of both worlds we must value the sanctity and scarcity of nature. Suburbia allows for the filth of the city to pile up around its edges in the form of white picket fences and Starbucks as far as the eye can see. We desire the perfect place to live, but if we continue with our modern consumption, that place will no longer remain - at least not in it's pure form.
