Water Problems
In the geography of human-environment interaction class I am taking this semester, we have had discussions and done research about how there is a challenge facing water and its availability in some parts of the world. In this section of the class, we talked about societies facing challenges because world population distribution isn’t corresponding to the distribution of water resources. With this problem, peoples use of the environment has been influenced by technology like damming and hydroelectric power. However, less then 1% of the earth's water is fresh water. It’s been stressed that much of that percentage goes to agriculture and industrial usage while little is getting reused and being used as drinking water. This poses serious threats for the future and uneven distribution between developed and undeveloped countries.
Water is not infinite, yet humans treat it like so. I think environmental problems always go back to the same conclusion, that humans are commodifying the land, and treating it as if there is an abundance of resources and land. While some know that this isn’t true, big money hungry corporations don’t always care. This way of thinking, and with humans allowing the water supply to drastically lessen and be uneven relates to the books we have read in this class. Humans can’t sit and let nature do its thing. If we did, there may be wouldn’t be this serious of a water problem globally.
