Wonder and Waste Paradox

The paradigm of wonder and waste is hard to find a happy medium to combat. Elizabeth Johnson explained this paradox as humans wanting to explore the world and seeks to understand the world, but can't see its beauty for what it is because there is a constant addition of pollution. In order for humans to wonder, there needs to be less waste. The two contradict themselves because it is hard to receive both at the same time, almost impossible.

Relationships With Other Species

In my research on Elizabeth Johnson, she focuses on showing equality in our actions and thoughts about species other than humans. She says species are sources of revelation because they reflect Gods infinite wisdom and goodness. Other species call us into relationships with them, and we have to form these relationships or else this world and its ecosystems are going to continue to spiral down.  I think in order to create these relationships with other species, we need to prioritize what our main goals are for our populations while including the other species in order for them to not get taken out by us. I think we need to use the resources we have and figure out alternative ways to get what we need or be okay with not having too much or too little of a particular thing. There are a lot of unknowns but the hoarding of resources causes an unbalance of that resource, where the developed world gets much of the source while developing countries don't nearly get enough to sustain them...

The idolatrous impulse

[Assigned Reading] From Nature to Creation “What the world is... is becoming more and more a reflection of how we want the world to be”. The increased power of individual autonomy and influence has lead man to put his beliefs and actions in accordance with himself rather than in nature, being God’s Creation. This has prompted an abundance of pollution and production of greenhouse gasses that are destroying the world’s status. Humans are increasingly viewing the land, vegetation, and other animals as resources, rather than other aspects of God’s creation, seeing them only for their utility. Genetic Modification

Humans have domesticated both plants and animals over centuries.  With this type of control we often feel that we are more powerful than nature.  Domestication lead humans to discover a way to establish even more control over nature.  Genetic Modification is the new way to dominate both plants and animals.  However, with this form of control we have created problems for ourselves.  When we select for specific genes repeatedly it removes variation.  This becomes an issue because eventually this leads to species being breed that are from the same line, this is called inbreeding.  When inbreeding happens genetic mutations are more likely to occur.  Often these mutations are harmful to the species we are breeding.
